05 Sep Nieuw Duvel Glass Designed By Morrison Schiffmacher
Dutch Morrison Schiffmacher can join the ranks of special artists who were allowed to create a design for the iconic Duvel Collection. Since 2007, Duvel has invited prominent artists to unleash their most creative talent on the uniquely shaped glass. Two Dutch (male) artists preceded Morrison, Parra in 2010 and Letman in 2012. Duvel and Morrison are a perfect match. The heritage of both crafts, brewing beer and tattooing, is based on authenticity and respect for the past. With this, they have stood the test of time. And that is reflected in the design. In his own style, Morrison was inspired by the story that one in 1000 Duvel bottles has an angel on the label in addition to a devil.
Morrison Schiffmacher immortalized on Duvel Glass
With the iconic Duvel Collection, Duvel wants to offer a stage to artists and creators who are a perfect match for the brand. The choice for Morrison was quickly made. Morrison, like Duvel, stands for a combination of passion, good taste, craftsmanship and perfection. And a nice detail, both are family businesses. Morrison has followed in the footsteps of her father Henk Schiffmacher. As a baby, she would sit on her father’s lap while he was tattooing. Duvel has been around since 1871 and today the 4th generation of the Moortgat family watches over the Belgian beer. “The Duvel glass is so characteristic and iconic, I felt honored that I was asked to come up with a design,” says Morrison. “I am a fan of Flemish artists and the city of Antwerp and immediately delved into the history of Duvel and the glass. I was captivated by the story about the little devil and the little angel on the label. I love those kinds of contrasts anyway. I imagined a sailor or a sailor getting a tattoo with contrasts (the devil and the angel) and then enjoying a glass of beer in the pub and having a good chat. My design does not show the contrast, but rather the interplay between good and evil, the connection between the devil and the angel. A metaphor for life, and therefore also for an evening in the pub.”
About the Art Glass
The collector’s item art glass, designed by Morrison Schiffmacher, is temporarily available from mid-August at almost all major supermarkets and liquor stores. The glass is packaged in a gift pack with four bottles of Duvel and an art glass. The recommended retail price for the gift pack is €6.99. The Belgian brewery Duvel Moortgat has always had a special interest in contemporary art, design and architecture. For example, they regularly collaborate with museums for contemporary art such as SMAK, WIELS and international events such as the Venice and Lyon biennales. Michel Moortgat (CEO Duvel Moortgat) has a great interest in contemporary visual arts, as is evident from his positions on the boards of directors of: the Wiels Centre for Contemporary Art (Brussels) and the President Heritage Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation (Brussels). After a number of successful collaborations for international fairs and events, the first collaboration between Michel Moortgat and Arne Quinze arose in 2007. Arne Quinze interpreted the Duvel bottle glass and the result was a highly original limited series. The Duvel collection was born.
