says Laing, who is now 72 but still rattles like an enthusiastic child.<br \/>\n&#8216;We have large stocks and not only that; we have barrels that other whisky makers can&#8217;t access.&#8217;  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Unique whiskey barrels<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the right hands, those unique barrels can also result in unique, versatile whiskies.<br \/>\nAs illustrated with the Remarkable Regional Malts.<br \/>\nDouglas Laing used his craftsmanship to create six whiskies that represent Scotland&#8217;s six whisky regions.<br \/>\nAnd so Speyside, Campbeltown, Islay, Highlands, Lowlands and the Western Isles are all available to taste, made with whiskies from distilleries that are actually in those regions.   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Laing: &#8220;First of all, sorry for the unassuming name. But it does signify how much we believe in this product. How do you make a blend that represents not a brand, but a region? That is independence. No board of directors to pass judgment. It was a bit of fun. But we make a hundred percent malt marriage. Most important is the quality: what do you do with your whisky? We don&#8217;t add dyes and we don&#8217;t cold filter. And if you can blend well, you can make great whiskies.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8216;The blender&#8217;s job is to create a consistent and recognizable flavor with changing vessels.<br \/>\nAnd that&#8217;s what we do.<br \/>\nWe don&#8217;t work with computers.<br \/>\nWe are not engineers in chemical analysis.<br \/>\nWe do<em>&#8220;the old <\/em><em>fashioned way<\/em>.<br \/>\nWith the nose, with the mouth, with the hands, with the eyes.<br \/>\nWe draw a lot of pride from that.&#8217;      <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Lifetime Achievement<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fred Laing is still full of fire for the craft he was raised on.<br \/>\nIn late 2020, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Spirits Business Awards.<br \/>\nWhen asked if this award does anything for him, Laing replied characteristically open and enthusiastic.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s nice to get this recognition.   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And the fact that I actually like this journal makes it all the more satisfying.<br \/>\nIf I fall over tomorrow, I&#8217;ll be proud of what I&#8217;ve accomplished, but I&#8217;m still hungry.<br \/>\nSometimes I look back to 1968 and think: It wasn&#8217;t that long ago, was it?<br \/>\nI have since handed over a lot of responsibilities to my daughter and son-in-law, but&#8230;. <em>I still get a buzz from the pulse of the company<\/em>.&#8217;   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Douglas Laing distilleries<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the projects currently on his mind is opening his own distillery.<br \/>\n&#8216;Eighteen months ago we bought a <em>boutique <\/em><em>distillery<\/em> called Strathearn, about eighty kilometers north of Edinburgh.<br \/>\nThere, for the first time in history, we will be making our real own whiskies.<br \/>\nSo besides blender, we are now also distillers.&#8217;   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">An even more ambitious project is also getting off the ground: a distillery with warehouses in hometown Glasgow.<br \/>\n&#8216;This project has been somewhat delayed because the earlier site we wanted was suddenly designated as river flood plains.<br \/>\nWell you have experience with that in the Netherlands, but here in Scotland we don&#8217;t exactly have expertise in it.<br \/>\nSo we&#8217;re not going to put a distillery there.&#8217;   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8216;We have now purchased land on another site, which will be announced at the end of March.<br \/>\nThere we will build our distillery, warehouses and offices.<br \/>\nMy big dream is to still be able to pick the barrels to mature the first whiskies in them.&#8217;  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Family Love<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Speaking so passionately is also almost only possible when it is more than just work.<br \/>\nFor Fred Laing, this is life.<br \/>\nAnd he puts that dedication into the products that come out of the family business.  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8216;There is a genuine emotional connection.<br \/>\nWhen I see a picture of my father, I see a reminder of our heritage.<br \/>\nAnd for me personally, it&#8217;s especially wonderful to realize that this business will survive the second generation.<br \/>\nMany family businesses don&#8217;t get beyond the second generation.&#8217;   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8216;And with us, there is already a third generation ready to go, even more shrewd than I have been in the past fifty years.<br \/>\nAnd there is even already a potential fourth generation &#8230; two grandchildren!<br \/>\nI know, I shouldn&#8217;t expect anything from them, but how nice it would be&#8230;&#8217;  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Douglas Laing tells a story that not many people know.
